South Africa went to England knowing that a Test Series victory would elevate the team to the Number One spot on the team rankings and hand them a tangible reminder that they are the best in the World, The ICC Test championship Mace.
The Proteas trumped the Poms 0 – 2 in the series. With only 3 matches to achieve the feat and the English notorious bad weather, not all was on our side. The abrupt withdrawal of Mark Boucher to a career ending eye injury did help. The Proteas with this victory dedicating it to there now retired teammate.
The Test Match at Lords was probably one of the best that you’ll see for a long time. Two seemingly even matched team battling it out. Low scores and highlights: Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander for SA and Jonny Bairstow and Matt Prior for England. Gritty tailend scrapping and impeccable strategy on the part of the two Captains saw this Test meander to the very end. SA standing on top, mace in hand and thoroughly deserved victors in a Series where they were just a notch above the Poms.
