Nick Diaz issues challenge to Anderson Silva
Yes that’s right, I said it. Nick Diaz the very controversial welterweight superstar issued a challenge to middleweight kingpin Anderson “the Spider” Silva this passed Monday via his manager Cesar Gracie.
Diaz, who is serving a year suspension after getting marijuana metabolites detected in his system, fought to a five round split decision loss to Carlos Condit for the interim welterweight title at UFC 143. Silva recently defended his belt in dominant fashion against the one guy everybody thought would beat him, Chael Sonnen, and has now completely cleaned out the middleweight division not leaving a single worthy challenger.
Cesar Gracie published the news of the challenge issued by Diaz on Gracifighter.com and Ed Soares the manager of Silva stated that he thought it was “not a bad idea” and that he would have a sit down with Dana White this coming Monday. Gracie also stated that Nick was not interested in fighting for Anderson’s title but if Silva is not willing to fight at a catch weight, presumably 180 pounds, then Diaz would move up to 185 for the challenge.
If this fight does happen i think that Diaz will give Silva a real challenge firstly because Diaz is not scared, he’s really tough and has a really fantastic ground game. The one thing all of Silva’s opponents had in common was that they were scared of him (excluding Dan Henderson and Patrick Cote).
If this challenge is met and the UFC agrees we could be in for a genuine fight of the year candidate.
