Cape Town to host Prestigious Fashion Week
City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, and the Chairperson of African Fashion International (AFI), Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, will open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town on Wednesday 25 July 2012, with a red carpet event to celebrate Fashion Week’s 10th anniversary. With this year’s theme of ‘icons’, it is appropriate that the glamorous opening night will be held at Cape Town’s iconic City Hall, which will be converted for the first time into a haute couture venue with three runway locations showcasing the garments of city designers Rosenwerth (who celebrates 50 years in fashion), Jenni Button’s Philosophy and Kluk CGDT.
Darling and Plein Streets will be blocked off on the night to allow for media personalities Elana Afrika and Ryan O’Connor to catch celebrities and dignitaries arriving on the red carpet.
“We are delighted to once again host Cape Town Fashion Week as it places Cape Town firmly on the global fashion map. This in turn stimulates jobs in tourism and the city’s important garment industry, while nurturing Cape Town’s creative and design industry in general. Cape Town Fashion Week is one of the significant events on our annual events calendar which attract lots of people from diverse backgrounds throughout the city, country and international fashion industry,” said Mayor De Lille.
One of Africa’s most significant fashion events, while this is the inaugural year for its sponsor, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town is one of Africa’s most significant fashion events hit the runway in 2003 as one of the first events to take place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).
Since then it has grown into one of the African continent’s most prestigious fashion events, presenting South Africa’s Spring/Summer fashion collections for the upcoming season. With 26 designers presenting their ranges in 18 runway shows at the CTICC from 26 – 28 July 2012, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town features some of the country’s most celebrated fashion names along with exciting established designers and emerging designers.
In partnership with the Cape Town Fashion Council (CTFC), AFI will also present a special showcase of emerging designers; while the AFI Fastrack™ BUSINESS SEMINARS, to be held on 27 July, will focus on education and development of the African fashion industry with international market trend leaders. AFI’s Fastrack™ programme is the leading platform for nurturing new designers in South Africa, aimed at honing creative talents and aligning them with sustainable business skills.
As part of the FRANCE – SOUTH AFRICA SEASONS cultural exchange, AFI will also host an AFI Fastrack™ Masterclass business seminar by Fred Sathal on 25 July. In collaboration with the French Embassy, the renowned designer will mentor four AFI Fastrack™ designers who will travel to France next year. “It is a triumph of Cape Town’s enduring creative design spirit that Cape Town Fashion Week returns for its 10th year,” says African Fashion International(AFI) Executive Chairperson Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe.
“Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town is a highlight on the African fashion calendar, made even more important by the fact that numerous international fashion media will be covering the event and sending their reports on South African fashion and Cape Town’s unique culture world-wide,” Dr Moloi-Motsepe added.
AFI is the premier fashion events and promotions company on the African continent, providing platforms to showcase African creative talent with a mission to take African fashion to the world. Along with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa, the luxury automobile maker also sponsors other prestigious fashion weeks around the world including New York, Tokyo and Berlin.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town is also supported by South African Tourism, as it aligns with its current strategy to present Cape Town and South Africa in general as a unique lifestyle destination abroad. Presenting South Africa’s definitive Spring/Summer collections 2012/2013, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town is hosted by the City of Cape Town and presented by African Fashion International and runs at the CTICC from 26 – 28 July 2012.
