Weekend Updates: 6 – 8 July 2012

This weekend was, if your living in Cape Town, one to be indoors in. having torrential downpours and rivers breaking their banks. Glad we had the sport to keep us warm, along with that fire. Here are your results.

Tennis: Wimbledon

The grand ‘ol English Grand Slam had many a heart pumping, not least the Brits who for the first time in over 60 years, had a player in the final. That player Andy Murray faced the stone wall of Swiss Maestro Roger Federer. The win winning his 7th Wimbledon and 17th Grand Slam overall, in the process regaining the number 1 spot on the World Rankings. The final gave us excitement but ultimately I think it was only the Brits who suspected an upset. And in the ladies final, an emotional Serena Williams overcame the polish dame Agnieszka Radwanska to win her 5th Wimbledon crown sparking a teary award ceremony.

Mens Final:

Roger Federer bt Andy Murray 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4

Womens Final:

Serena Williams bt Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7, 6-2

Rugby: Super Rugby

The penultimate round of the 2012 season of Super Rugby started to put things in perspective for most teams. Most of the juggernauts setting themselves up for comfortable final games while others have lots to do to clinch a place in the play offs. The Sharks won impressively against the Bulls and after this round, 3 South African teams find themselves in the playoff position, with defending Champions the Reds out in the cold leaving the ever improving Brumbies outfits the sole Australian representative. The table topping Chiefs and the team the beat them this weekend, the Crusaders round off the Playoff contending contingent. Mathematically the Reds and Hurricanes still have an opportunity to sneak to the playoffs.
