The Obama’s and Our Key
So the Obama’s are going to receive the key to the city. Any thoughts on that??
According to the mayor the Obama’s epitomises everything the city believes in. ‘In this cynical age there is a desperate need for universal hope’ said Mayor Patricia De Lille of the awarding of the freedom of the city award to the Obama’s
‘In recognition of their inspirational example and proof that every obstacle can be overcome, I have proposed that the Rules Committee recommends to Council that the City of Cape Town awards the Freedom of the City to the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama and the First Lady of the United States of America, Michele Obama.’
Now I do not have any problem with the fact that the city is awarding the key to the city to the President and First Lady of the United States of America. But what I do have a problem with is Cape Town’s hypocritical stance of dragging as much exposure as possible from the event. My question would also be why should it have to go to them?
We as South Africans disregard so much of the work that is done in our own back yard that we would have to trek halfway round the world to find a ‘suitable’ candidate for this award. I am not sure what the Obama’s have done for us but have a Hollywood style depiction of their strife against all odds, and the usual yank commercialization of it. I’m almost sure Barack Obama’s doesn’t lose sleep thinking about the challenges facing Cape Town, where it now seems we are bending over backwards to recognise them?
Aren’t we just being caught up in the Hoo-ah? Couldn’t their possible be a better way to use our time and resources? How do the Obama’s actually really resonate with us?
I’m sure it will work out in the end and Cape Town will again sell itself heartlessly on the global stage, our PR executives again bringing our world to a standstill as it devotedly touts its importance, apparently it will bring us ‘closer’ together?!
Just questions…, thoughts?
