Junior Dos Santos defends against Mir on May 26
The fight is set and its around the corner at UFC 146 on May 26th and its for the most coveted prize in all of MMA, the UFC Heavyweight title which will be competed between the champ Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (14-1) and number one contender Frank Mir (16-5).
Junior became heavyweight champion back in November 2012 when the UFC aired for the first time on the FOX network. He dethroned Cain Velasquez (9-1) in just over 60 seconds of the first round, to the surprise of many since Cain was a heavy fan favourite after stripping the title away from Brock Lesnar (5-3) about 1 year prior at UFC 121 also by TKO in the very first round.
A ton of controversy has surrounded this match up for the past 2 months now since Allistair Overeem (36-11-1) was initially set to be the number one contender to the title after he completely destroyed Brock Lesnar, kicked him out into retirement and back to the pretend world of WWE, where he belongs. Overeem is the most decorated heavyweight to ever compete, holding three different championships simultaneously and was a legit threat to Cigano’s title. BUT then Overeem tested positive for elevated testosterone levels at surprise drug test at a press conference and has since been deemed unable to compete.
In step Frank Mir, who was initially scheduled to face Cain Velasquez, and replaces Overeem as number one contender. The inclusion of Mir in the main event also allows for some bad blood, and ideas of revenge, to play a part since in Mir’s last outing in the Octagon he submitted and broke the shoulder/arm of Mixed Martial Arts legend “Minotauro” Noguiera (33-7-1) via kimura who happens to be a coach and mentor to Dos Santos.
Stylistically this is a fantastic match up since both competitors have dissimilar syles. Frank Mir has some of if not the best BJJ in the heavyweight division and if the fight goes to the ground its almost always gonna be finished there in devastating fashion. With that said, Junior Dos Santos has arguably the best hands in all of MMA, no one he faced has been able to withstand those meteorites he calls hands and Frank’s chin has looked very questionable in the past sinced he’d been stopped by Shane Carwin, Brock and was en route to being stopped in the Noguiera fight, despite that Mir remains dangerous.
This is the heavyweight division and to predict a winner is never easy since the fight can swing in anyone’s favour but i have a feeling Mir will not be able to withstand the speed and power Dos Santos throws with.
Prediction: Dos Santos, KO 1st round
